NYC Tow Truck Endorsement Practice Exam

The tag axle primarily functions as a free-rolling unit, which means it does not contribute to the propulsion of the vehicle. Instead, it serves to provide additional support and weight distribution for the vehicle, particularly when towing. Because it rolls freely without being directly powered, the tag axle does not generate drive or power but helps in stabilizing the vehicle, especially in heavy towing situations.

The role of the tag axle is particularly significant in ensuring that the load is well-distributed across the vehicle, which can enhance handling and safety during towing. This design helps maintain the balance of the towing setup and can prevent issues such as swaying or fishtailing. The other options describe functions that are typically associated with drive axles, which are specifically designed to provide propulsion and power, unlike the tag axle, which is supplementary in nature.
